The Beauty of Being a MISFIT
Author Lidia Yuknavitch shares her stories of losses, shame, and slow process of self- acceptance. She refers to herself as a "misfit". She came from an abusive household, had two failed marriages, she had been on drugs, she left school a few times, and has also been to jail, twice. She feels that the reason she was a misfit was because her daughter died the same day she was born and she hadn't figured out how to deal with it yet. Now she has over come those obstacles and wants to share her life journey ion order for others to embrace their misfit beauties the same way she did. This Ted Talks relates to Holden Caulfield, because everything about his was different from everything else. He is like Lidia Yukavitch because he has suffered some losses, the same way she did. Holden's little brother, Allie, died from leukemia and that changed everything. After that, he had been kicked out of schools for his failing grades. Holden is intelligent but he doesn't try anymore. Every one he comes in contact with is "phony", except his little sister Pheobe and a old friend, Jane Gallagher. Whenever he needs someone to talk to, he goes to her because he feels that she understands him more than anyone else and with Jane, he grew to like her very much because they had spent summer together and became good friends. Other than that, he didnt have a good connection with anyone, not even his parents. Holden is a very interesting character because even with what hes gone through, he tells his little sister that he wants to be the "catcher in the rye" when she asks him what he wants to do, so that he can protect the children and their innocence . So like Lidia Yukavitch, he embraced his inner misfit and that was his beauty. |
